A healthy retail sector is central to the city’s success. With signs of economic recovery in recent times, a key challenge for the city is to facilitate the anticipated retail growth for the Plan period. The strategic objective of the retail strategy is to ensure the primacy of the city centre retail core as the premier shopping area in the State. Changes in retailing formats and space demands need to be supported by the Plan in order to deliver on the strategy.
A mix of retail in association with supporting uses and services such as bars and restaurants and other leisure uses can provide the city with a competitive edge in relation to the challenge from out of town and suburban shopping centres.
